Immerse your self in Japanese culture and enjoy an onigiri (rice ball), sandwich, parfait, soft serve, tea, or many other options at Behind the Museum Cafe in downtown Portland. The interior decor brings you back to old school Japan with a relaxing atmosphere featuring local artwork for sale. Ever since we moved to Portland, Behind the Museum Cafe was on our “must go” list. Pictures of beautiful parfaits and drool worthy matcha specialities caught our attention. But what shocked us the most? The Hojicha soft serve. For those of you who don’t know, think of Hojicha as the tea version of coffee.
It was summer when we had this treat and it was an amazing cold blast to combat the summer heat. We also ordered the matcha parfait and although it looked scrumptious and picture perfect, we were a bit underwhelmed when it came to this. This is just our opinion so take it with a grain of salt, but as eaters who have experienced matcha in Japan, this was o-kay.
Our tip? Try a sandwich or onigiri and order that soft serve for dessert with a side of hot tea.
